Program: M.A., Educational Administration

Higher Education

Overview

The Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies offers programs leading to degrees and/or credentials in the field of Educational Administration. Students may pursue programs leading to the M.A. Degree in Educational Administration, Higher Education option or K-12 option, as well as studies directed at achieving the Preliminary and Clear Administrative Services Credentials.

The student choosing the Master’s Degree in Education, Higher Education option start their program with ELPS 600HE: Research Design in Higher Education and ELPS 601HE: American Higher Education. In the second semester of the program, the courses include: ELPS 688HE: Fieldwork in Higher Education Administration, ELPS 656HE: Diversity and Student Success in Higher Education, and ELPS 650HE: Contemporary Administrative Leadership in Higher Education. The program includes one summer course in year one, ELPS 673HE: Leadership for Managing Reform in Higher Education. Fall of year two includes, ELPS 690HE: Research Analysis in Higher Education and ELPS 667HE: The Organization and Administration of Community College Education. To complete the program in year two, students take three courses in their final spring semester: ELPS 663HE: Higher Education Policy & Law, ELPS 674HE: Higher Education Operations: Financial and Human Resources, and 698CHE: Culminating Experience in Higher Education.

This program can be entered through one of the CSUN academic colleges or through the The Tseng College. The program offered through the Tseng College is entirely funded by student fees, offered in the cohort format and features evening and weekend course schedules.

Program Requirements

A. Requirements for Admission to the Program

  1. Two Letters of Recommendation from a faculty member or a practicing college or university administrator indicating potential for administrative leadership.
  2. Cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0 (based on a semester system), or a passing Score of 50th percentile or higher in one of the three areas of the GRE, or a percentile score of 50 or better on the MAT or possession of a previous Master’s Degree.
  3. Passing Score on Upper Division Writing Proficiency Exam or an Analytical Writing Score of 3 or better on the GRE.

B. Special Requirements

  1. Must attain classified status according to university catalog (GRE, WPE, 2 Letters of Recommendations) before enrolling in and completing the culminating experience Graduate Project.
  2. Masters students complete their Graduate Project.
