Exploration of the political, cultural and social themes of U.S. history prior to the Civil War, with emphasis given to examining conflicting ideas about such issues as the dynamics of colonial settlement, the origins of the Revolution, the ratification of the U.S. Constitution, the development of liberal capitalism, the nature of the American democratic political system, the impact of slavery and the causes of the Civil War.
