Program: Bilingual Authorization
Program Description
Bilingual Authorization in Spanish, Korean or Armenian may be obtained concurrently with the preliminary teaching credential or after students obtain their preliminary teaching credential. Students in any credential program other than the Traditional Program must be approved for the concurrent program by their program coordinator (ACT, Intern, FYI/JYI, ITEP, or Dual).
Program Requirements
A. Admission Requirements
Admission to the Bilingual Authorization program requires that students demonstrate proficiency in the language of the authorization they are seeking (Spanish, Korean, or Armenian) through one of the following options:
- Passage of CSET LOTE II (Armenian) or CSET LOTE III (Korean or Spanish).
- College or high school transcript (three years or more) from a country where the target language is spoken.
- College major in Armenian, Korean or Spanish.
B. Program Requirements
Once admitted to the Bilingual Authorization program, students are required to take SED 525BL Bilingual and Bicultural Teaching in Multiethnic Secondary Schools (3) and a culture-specific class; i.e., CHS 430 The Chicana/o Child (3) or CHS 431 The Chicana/o Adolescent (3) for Spanish bilingual authorization; or SED 516K Seminar in Teaching the Bilingual/Bicultural Student: Korean American (3) for Korean bilingual authorization; or ARMN 440 Armenian American Child (3) for Armenian bilingual authorization. They must also complete a fieldwork component and an exit portfolio. Prior to being recommended for the Bilingual Authorization, students must pass the CSET LOTE II (Armenian) or III (Korean and Spanish).
