Textiles Option

Program Description

The Fashion Design and Merchandising program offers an analytical study of concepts and their application related to the design, production and merchandising of textiles and apparel. Basic knowledge from the physical and social sciences, technology, aesthetics and business is applied to the principles of the design, production, manufacturing and merchandising of textiles, apparel and accessories. Graduates enter a wide spectrum of careers in such positions as a fashion designer, fashion buyer, fashion merchandiser, fashion stylist, product developer, quality assurance coordinator/manager, technical fashion designer, production manager, textile designer, material developer, showroom manager, retail manager/owner, fashion journalist, sales representative/executive, museum curator, creative director, inventory planner and costume designer.

The Textiles Option offers fundamental knowledge of structures, properties, performance, dyeing, printing, finishes, and testing in apparel, home, and technical textiles. Students will learn how to create, improve, and deliver textile products to consumers through scientific and technical methods in applied research.

Undergraduate students must complete 48 units of General Education as described in this Catalog, including 3 units of coursework meeting the Ethnic Studies (ES) graduation requirement.

12 units are satisfied by the following courses in the major: CHEM 100 or CHEM 110 satisfies B1 Physical Science; CHEM 100L or CHEM 110L satisfies B3 Science Laboratory Activity; FCS 253 and FCS 357 satisfy D1 Social Sciences; and FCS 171 satisfies E Lifelong Learning.

If taken, FCS 324 satisfies B5 Scientific Inquiry and Quantitative Reasoning.

Program Learning Outcomes

Students receiving a Bachelor of Science in Fashion Design and Merchandising will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate theoretical, scientific, and practical knowledge of the study of fashion design and merchandising.
  2. Demonstrate ability in perceiving, interpreting, applying and evaluating the knowledge in the study of fashion design and merchandising to solve real-world problems.
  3. Demonstrate critical thinking skills in theoretical and scientific knowledge from the study of fashion design and merchandising to current and future issues of health and well-being for individuals, families and global communities in diverse sociocultural backgrounds.
  4. Demonstrate effective communication skills to disseminate knowledge in the study of fashion design and merchandising in aligning with professional and ethical standards.
