Course: CJS 456. Sexual Violence (3)
Prerequisite: CJS 101 or CJS 102 or CJS 302 or permission from instructor. Preparatory: CJS 326. This course explores the incidence and prevalence of sexual violence as it occurs in various contexts across social dimensions including gender, race/ethnicity/indigeneity, sexuality, disability, age, class, and their intersections. Sexual violence will be discussed within a broader sociocultural framework of gender, power, and the way we define and respond to sexual crimes, offenders, and survivors. We will critically examine systemic and institutional responses and policies to sexual violence offenders and survivors, and how these responses fit within the broader rape culture. Students will critically evaluate existing support mechanisms for survivors, offenders, and communities and learn to engage in strategies for prevention and intervention personally and professionally via the social ecological model. Available for graduate credit.
