Course: AFRS 340A-Z. Selected Topics in Africana Studies (3-3)
Prerequisite: Students must be at the sophomore level to enroll in AFRS 340A-Z. This course examines the political, social and cultural history of African Americans in Los Angeles. Through readings, film, discussion and field experiences, students will uncover the significance of individuals, broader historical events and discriminatory practices on the community’s formation and evolution. Equipped with this knowledge, contemporary issues that impact the community, such as gentrification, community development and healthcare will be analyzed with the intent to offer recommendations and solutions. The course may be repeated once for credit provided the topic is different.
