Course: CHEM 470SC. Science Careers (3)
Prerequisites: CHEM 102; Upper division standing. Recommended Preparatory: BIOL 107; BIOL 360; BIOL 380; CHEM 321; CHEM 333. This course is designed to introduce undergraduate and graduate students to science-oriented industry and academic careers through seminars from invited guest speakers from diverse sectors within pharmaceutical/biotechnology companies and academic institutions. Presentations from speakers will be complemented by companion readings, class discussions of the material from specialized literature, and presentations by the students. Students will become acquainted with real-world problems addressed by science professionals, how teams of scientists work together, and how science professionals build the required knowledge and skills to succeed. This course will provide students opportunities to discuss what they have learned about real-world problems and the scientific basis for their solutions, reflect on how industry professionals have prepared themselves for success, and gain and practice career development skills needed for their future employment. 3 hours of lecture per week.
