Course: ME 538. Design of Smart Mechanical Systems (3)
Prerequisites: ME 330; ME 386, or equivalent. Introduction to mechanical systems and structures that include smart materials, such as piezoelectric materials, shape memory alloys, and electroactive polymers, with a focus on their mathematical modeling, simulation, analysis, and design. The use of smart material elements as sensors and actuators. Applications of smart materials in passive and active vibration damping. The use of commercial finite element analysis software in modeling smart mechanical systems. Final research-based course project.
