Course: MEIS 100. Arabs and Muslims in the U.S. (3)

This course examines the histories and contemporary realities of Arabs and Muslims in the United States. Students will learn how ‘Arab’ and ‘Muslim’ are categories that sometimes overlap, and sometimes include people from different religious, racial, and cultural backgrounds. Course materials will include histories of Arab and Muslim migration to the U.S., debates around how to racially classify them, patterns of political participation, media representation, Islam and hip-hop, and contestations regarding gender and sexuality within these communities.
