Course: MUS 338J. Jazz Methods (2)

Prerequisite: Admission to the Pre-Teaching area. Recommended Preparatory: MUS 219A. This course is an overview of jazz education practices and philosophies specific to grades 6-12 and addresses ensemble types (instrumental and vocal), improvisation pedagogy, rehearsal techniques, clinical skills and program structures. Students develop lesson plans and curriculum for jazz courses they may be expected to teach as part of a grades 6-12 public school teaching appointment. Teaching demonstrations, vocal and instrumental improvisation, self-reflection and assessment, and peer review are required. Required for Pre-Teaching option; others admitted if space permits. 4 hours per week.
