Course: RTM 353/L. Wilderness, Literature, and the Human Experience and Lab (2/1)
Prerequisite: Completion of the lower division writing requirement. Corequisite: RTM 353L. This course explores the writings of notable wilderness authors including Daniel Boone, John Muir, Aldo Leopold, and Edward Abbey, with a focus on the human search for meaning through experiences in nature. Through critical analysis of these works, students will examine the philosophical, literary, and cultural values expressed in wilderness literature, including the concepts of solitude, conservation, and personal transformation. Students will also participate in experiential learning through field trips, where they will observe, document, and analyze their personal interactions with nature. These field experiences will serve as the basis for reflective writing assignments, where students will critically evaluate how their experiences mirror or diverge from the themes and values found in the texts, deepening their understanding of the human connection to the natural world. Meets the Lifelong Learning requirement. Available for General Education, Area 3B Humanities. (W.I.)
