Academic Advisement

The Department of Secondary Education offers Preliminary Single-Subject teaching credentials, Added Authorizations and a Master of Arts degree in Education with various options.

The Department of Secondary Education offers Preliminary Single-Subject credentials via four pathway programs:

  • Traditional Program
  • Accelerated Collaborative Teacher Preparation Program (ACT)
  • Single-Subject University Intern Program
  • Four-Year or Junior Year Integrated Program (FYI or JYI) in English or Mathematics

The Department of Secondary Education collaborates with the Department of Elementary Education to offer the General Education Induction Program, which enables holders of the California Preliminary Multiple- or Single-Subject Credential to earn the California Clear Credential. The General Education Induction Program can be blended with the department’s Master of Arts degree in Education.

A holder of a Single Subject Credential may add a second credential in a different subject without completing the full preparation program. See the CTC requirements.

The Department of Secondary Education offers a Master of Arts degree in Education with the following options:

  • Subject Specialist: English Education, Mathematics Education, Science Education, or Social Sciences Education
  • Curriculum and Instruction
  • Computers and Educational Technology
  • Multicultural and Multilingual Education

Careers

Earning a credential or master degree’s in secondary education can lead to a spectrum of opportunities. In addition to classroom teaching (and as teachers gain more experience and advanced credentials), there are positions as teacher coaches, developing and/or providing professional development for teachers; and in the corporate world, developing curriculum for educational purposes and providing educational professional development.

Accreditation

All credential programs and education-related master’s degrees are accredited by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing and by the National Council on the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).

Clubs and Societies

Pi Lambda Theta (PLT) is the CSUN chapter of Phi Delta Kappa, an honor society for Education students with a grade point average of at least 3.50. View the PLT Newsletter on the Michael D. Eisner College of Education Student Resources website.
