About the Department
The Department of Secondary Education offers Preliminary Single Subject Teaching Credential Programs, Added Authorizations, a Teacher Induction Program leading to the Clear Credential, and Master of Arts degree programs.
The Department of Secondary Education offers Preliminary Single Subject Credentials via five pathway programs:
- Traditional Program
- Accelerated Collaborative Teacher Preparation Program (ACT)
- Single Subject University Intern Program
- Four-Year or Junior-Year Integrated Program (FYI or JYI) in English or Mathematics
- Dual Single Subject/Education Specialist Teaching Credential (Mild/Moderate Disabilities)
The Department of Secondary Education collaborates with the Departments of Elementary and Special Education to offer a Teacher Induction Program, which enables holders of the California Preliminary Multiple or Single Subject Credential to earn the Clear Credential. Please note: The Secondary Education Teacher Induction courses are currently under revision.
A holder of a Single Subject Credential may add a second credential in a different subject without completing the full preparation program. See CTC requirements (.pdf) for more information.

Master of Arts
The Department of Secondary Education offers the following Master of Arts degree programs and options:
- Master of Arts in Educational Technology
- Master of Arts in Multicultural and Multilingual Education in Secondary Schools
- Master of Arts in Secondary Curriculum and Instruction
- Master of Arts in Secondary English Education
- Master of Arts in Secondary Mathematics Education
- Master of Arts in Secondary Science Education

Earning a credential or master’s degree in secondary education can lead to a spectrum of opportunities. In addition to classroom teaching (and as teachers gain more experience and advanced credentials), these opportunities include positions as instructional coaches and department chairs; developing and/or providing professional development for teachers; and, in the corporate world, developing curriculum for educational purposes and providing educational professional development.
The department’s credential programs are accredited by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.
Clubs and Societies
