Online Course Designations

Fully Online Class Types

Fully Online and Asynchronous (FOA)

These classes do not have a set meeting time. There are no on-campus meetings.

Fully Online and Synchronous (FOS)

These classes have a set meeting time. Students are expected to be able to be online via the recommended software platform during the entire meeting time slot. There are no on-campus meetings.

Fully Online and Intermittent (FOI)

These classes have some set meeting times and some work is done outside of the in-person sessions. Students are expected to be able to be online via the recommended software platform during the entire meeting time slot. Students should consult the schedule of classes and faculty member for details of the meeting pattern. Faculty are responsible for following syllabus policy in accurately describing meeting times in the syllabus. There are no on-campus meetings.

Campus Online/Hybrid Class Types

Online and Asynchronous (COA)

These classes do not have a set meeting time. Face-to-face meetings are scheduled for activities such as orientation, special in-class presentations, exams or other in-class proofs of competency.

Online and Synchronous (COS)

These classes have a set meeting time. Students are expected to be able to be online via the recommended software platform during the entire meeting time slot. Face-to-face meetings are scheduled for activities such as orientation, special in-class presentations, exams or other in-class proofs of competency.

Online and Intermittent (COI)

These classes have a set meeting time and some work is done outside of the in-person sessions. Students should plan to be available for all the meeting times though some meeting may be cancelled in favor of asynchronous work. Faculty are responsible for following syllabus policy in accurately describing meeting times in the syllabus. Face-to-face meetings are scheduled for activities such as orientation, special in-class presentations, exams or other in-class proofs of competency.

Half Online (OH)

A course offering in which students attend class sessions on campus and in an online environment. The class typically meets approximately half online and half on campus.

Traditional Class

A course offering in which all or most of the class sessions take place on the CSUN campus. Most CSUN courses make use of some web-based tools to supplement or enhance a course, so even a traditional class may include online components and activities (e.g., view a syllabus, take quizzes/exams, participate in discussions).
