Prerequisites: BIOL 106, BIOL 106L, BIOL 107 and BIOL 107L passed with grades of “C” or better; CHEM 101. Introduction to theory, techniques, and data analysis used in molecular biology research. Students learn through hands-on experience in the laboratory the experimental design, technical mechanisms, and interpretation of commonly used molecular biology experiments including: issues of laboratory safety, using bioinformatics in research, isolation and manipulation of DNA, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), qPCR, cloning, transformation of bacteria, growth and selection of bacteria, CRISPR-Cas9, protein isolation and quantification, gel electrophoresis, and emerging techniques. Lab 9 hours.
