Course: SED 669. Digital Literacies and Critical Perspectives in the 21st Century (3)

Prerequisites: Admission to Reading, Literacy, and Leadership Specialist Credential Program and/or master’s programs in Elementary Education (EED) or Secondary Education (SED). Recommended Preparatory: EED 520 or equivalent, EED 577 or equivalent, and a teaching credential, or SED 521 or equivalent, SED 525EN or equivalent, SED 529 or equivalent, and a teaching credential. This course explores the evolving landscape of literacy in the digital age, preparing educators to critically integrate technology and media into 21st-century literacy instruction. Through an inquiry-driven approach, candidates will examine digital and multimodal literacies, critical perspectives on technology, and the sociocultural dimensions of reading and writing. Students will investigate current research, engage in reflective practices, and design action research projects that address equity, access, and innovation in literacy education. Emphasis will be placed on developing a deep understanding of digital tools, evaluating emerging technologies, and cultivating critical literacies that empower diverse learners in a rapidly changing world.
