Academic Advisement

The Department of Secondary Education offers Preliminary Single-Subject teaching credentials, Added Authorizations, and a Master of Arts Degree in Education with various specializations.

The Department of Secondary Education offers Preliminary Single-Subject credentials via four pathway programs:

  1. Traditional Program
  2. Accelerated Collaborative Teacher Preparation Program (ACT)
  3. Single-Subject University Intern Program
  4. Four-Year and Junior-Year Integrated Programs (FYI and JYI) in English and Mathematics.

The Department of Secondary Education also offers a Master of Arts Degree in Education with the following specializations:

  1. Subject Specialist: English Education, Mathematics Education, Science Education or Social Sciences Education
  2. Curriculum and Instruction
  3. Computers and Educational Technology
  4. Multicultural and Multilingual Education

Careers

Earning a credential or masters degree in secondary education can lead to a spectrum of opportunities. In addition to classroom teaching, and as teachers gain more experience and advanced credentials, there are positions as teacher coaches, developing and/or providing professional development for teachers, and in the corporate world, developing curriculum for educational purposes and providing educational professional development.

Accreditation

All credential programs and education-related masters are accredited by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing and by the National Council on the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) programs.

Honors

Adding a Second Credential

A holder of a Single Subject Credential may add a second credential in a different subject without completing the full preparation program. See requirements at: www.ctc.ca.gov/credentials/leaflets/cl621a.pdf.
